Bair Island Sale

As a result of the surprise agreement by Redwood Shores Properties to sell Bair Island to Peninsula Open Space Trust for $15 million, the billboard strewn eyesore will soon be transformed into thriving wetland habitat. After years of pleas by environmentalists, Redwood Shores finally agreed to sell because the Trust presented a firm offer and cash in hand, according to a company spokesman. The trust will eventually transfer the 1,626 acre property-home to the endangered California clapper rail, California least tern and the salt marsh harvest mouse, among other threatened and endangered species - to U.S. Fish & Wildlife for inclusion in the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge. The property has been on the refuge's priority list for acquisition since 1988.
