Environmental Statement
The San Francisco Estuary Partnership has been working to improve the habitats, water quality, and public understanding of the San Francisco Bay Estuary for over 20 years. As planners of the State of the Estuary conference, we recognize the potential environmental impacts of hosting a conference. Keeping in alignment with the conference theme, we have taken several actions this year that are substantially contributing to a greener conference.
- GOING PAPERLESS, well almost …we continue to offer a web site, electronic registration and confirmation as well as advertising our event on the web and via email. This year we also decided to no longer print the abstracts OR the program packet as this information is available on the website-- free to print your own off the website, if you do, close the recycling loop by printing on recycled paper, double sided and use vegetable inks if possible. Keep in mind we will have posters with the schedule, copies of the final program, and other important information available at the conference.
- HOSTING in OAKLAND - a city that's as close to the resource, majority of speakers and interested parties as possible reduces the distances traveled by attendees. Being located at a BART station and on several major bus lines makes it easy to use public transit. http://www.bart.gov/ These actions minimize the overall carbon footprint of the conference. We encourage you to carpool, and use public transit.
- PRACTICING THE 3Rs – the Oakland Marriott City Center is a green certified hotel dedicated to conserving resources, preventing pollution, and minimizing waste. For more information on their green hotel policies please read at: http://www.marriott.com/marriott.mi?page=green_protecting. Bins AND compostable food waste containers will be available throughout the conference. As an added incentive the Marriott will contribute 5% of the total cost of our group's guest rooms to the Amazona's Sustainable Foundation to help protect and preserve the Juma Reserve in the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil. http://www.marriott.com/marriott.mi?page=preservetherainforest
- FOOD – We are decreasing the amount of solid waste produced at the event by:
- selecting menu items with minimal packaging
- using china when feasible
- using recyclable food containers
- asking attendees to bring their own water/coffee mugs
